By Kacee Allen ·

Folks, it’s Kacee. One story on the site today, and it’s about who owns the water in South Texas. Let’s walk through it.

An Israeli firm would own a planned Texas desalination plant. The Nueces River Authority voted unanimously on May 21, 2026, to pick IDE Technologies, an Israeli desalination company, to finance, build, own and operate a 100-million-gallon-per-day seawater plant on Harbor Island near Corpus Christi, part of a project estimated at about $6.4 billion. Cities and water districts that paid to reserve water will be asked to sign take-or-pay contracts, committing them to pay for their reserved supply whether they use it or not, and IDE plans to announce the price of the water in January. Corpus Christi City Council member Roland Barrera told Inside Climate News, “It’s better that the public agency owns the system,” while IDE’s Mark Ellison said, “The private people put skin in the game.”
